I think it is an INCREDIBLE privilege to be able to completely disconnect from one’s abuser.
Don’t you?
I mean, you know what I’m talking about?
You gotta have things and stuff and people and places and abilities and ideas. You gotta have it to be able to just walk way forever.
If my abuser hadn’t chosen to leave town I’d probably still be running into him at the grocery store. Given how little time most abusers serve & how useless restraining orders can be I’m frankly amazed that anyone thinks survivors won’t have to interact with their abusers at least occasionally.
Yeah. I was also thinking about how certain communities are small and it’s really difficult to avoid your abuser. The LGBT community is only so big. So if I want to do something like go to club, have brunch, see a movie, get coffee, go to fucking Pride events, I know it’s likely I’ll see my abuser (and the people who enabled her).
I really cut my self off from my friends & community for a long time because I couldn’t handle seeing my abuser all the time. It’s gotten better, but I’m still some what of a hermit locally because well. It’s hard for me to rebuild connections when I’m also still dealing with her.
Moved 3 states away. Run into him from time to time at my favorite pie shop.

This is important to remember — almost 3 years later, it’s easy to forget how lucky I was to get away.
